About Disabled Students Unlimited ( DSU )

The DSU was founded in the early 1970's as a group dedicated to supporting faculty & students with disabilities. The goal was to provide support with the transition to higher education, assist in learning the campus, introduce the member to the various programs dedicated to students with limitations, and to provide support through other students who have experienced difficulties at the college level. Thirty years have gone by since the inception of the DSU. As students and faculty have come and gone, new members have joined the ranks of the club. adding their own diversity to the group. The DSU also strives to promote acceptance and understanding of the experience of having a disability, and how to understand the challenges one faces when they are limited in the actions that most people take for granted.

The club has assisted many students, and faculty, with the transition to college life. Through various fundraising endeavors, the DSU plans and coordinates day-trips and some overnight camping trips to locations around the state. Most fund-raising activities are done via the DeAnza flea market. Hosting a Drink Stand brings in revenues which are used to purchase much-needed materials for the disabled student programs on campus. Books, writing materials, calculators, and recording equipment are just a sample of the materials purchased for students use.

Faculty & students do not need to have a disability to join the DSU. Just an interest in providing assistance to members who may ask for assistance with the transition to the college environment. The DSU invites anyone who has an interest to Join the club.
